Pitkin County officials had initially estimated the road might not open until June 15 – a month later than usual.
County road director Scott Mattice tells The Aspen Times they’re now aiming for the Friday before Memorial Day Weekend.
The U.S. Forest Service says unfortunately, the earlier road opening doesn’t help the 16 couples with plans to wed in the area between Memorial Day and June 14.
Shelly Grail, recreation manager for the Aspen-Sopris Ranger District, said Forest Service facilities at Maroon Lake may not be staffed until mid-June.
