Johnny Rooney, front, community educator with Durango Fire Protection District, and Doug Brockett, fire investigator and inspector with DFPD, give away plastic fire helmets and stickers to Florida Mesa Elementary School students after they learned what to do if they see smoke in their house. It was all part of the Kiwanis Club of Durango’s Safety Day at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. The Kiwanis have hosted the event for more than 20 years, with 10 organizations educating Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio second grade students about all types of safety. (Jerry McBride/Durango Herald)
