Fire preparedness exercises and simulations will take place this week across La Plata County.

The Office of Emergency management has arranged multiagency wildfire simulation exercises to help better prepare agencies and the public for the upcoming fire season.

It will include the emergency operations center activation, a public safety power shutdown drill with La Plata Electric Association, training for the county’s incident management teams and mock check-ins for rapid evacuation tags.

Drill notifications will be sent out through LPC Alert! – the county’s new emergency alert system.

On Tuesday, Rob Farino, OEM director, gave emergency management staff the first of the mock briefings. The fire simulations throughout the week will occur in the Edgemont, Durango Hills, Florida River Estates and Taylor Estates neighborhoods.

Additional information can be found at ReadyLaPlata.org.

The week will culminate with the Fire Ready Expo at the La Plata County Fairgrounds on Saturday.
