There is an inherent ambiguity to rape and sexual assault cases, due to, among other things, the complex dynamics of how trauma can influence victims’ choices and their thinking.
I have worked as a domestic violence advocate, and have also myself been a victim of rape, more than once. Like many, I made the decision not to press charges.
I think about how in small towns like ours, or in rural places (most of us work, live, eat, sleep and play together in a pretty small sandbox), such cases are often incredibly intense and confusing for everyone involved: the victim, the perpetrator(s), and for police and lawyers.
Can we expect a shift in Durango, just because New York City convicted Weinstein? Or do the same rules not apply here?
