Leadership is changing at Purgatory Resort.

General Manager Dave Rathbun will be moving into the role of CEO; Josh Benson, formerly with guest services, will become senior director of resort operations; and Michael Rosenfeld will lead community services, lodging, HOA management and real estate sales and development, according to an April 10 blog post signed by Rathbun.

“This change isn’t about moving away from who we are; it’s about ensuring we have the foundation to keep improving,” Rathbun wrote. “We have a world-class team and a community that cares deeply about this mountain. This shift allows us to move into the future with intention rather than just reacting to the present.”

Purgatory Resort declined to comment for this story.

In the blog post, Rathbun said stepping away from daily operational tasks will be “a significant change,” but moving into a CEO position is necessary to keep the resort running well.

“Customer expectations are shifting, and staying competitive as a premier regional destination requires a level of long-term analysis that day-to-day operations simply don’t allow for,” he wrote. “… Because of this, I am shifting my focus. I’m stepping away from the daily operational tasks to focus on the “long game” – developing solid business strategy and navigating the complex compliance and permitting world that dictates our future growth.”

Rathbun said the changes aren’t about “moving away from who we are,” but about “ensuring we have the foundation to keep improving.”
