Firefighters responded Monday to a multi-structure fire in the Edgemont Highlands subdivision northeast of Durango.

The fire was reported at 2:06 p.m. near Red Canyon Trail and Copper Rim Trail, according to scanner traffic.

Several fire trucks and law enforcement vehicles were on scene.

A first responder said it looked like “one house possibly exploded,” and flames were spreading to tree lines and possibly other structures – maybe a townhome development.

No injuries were reported as of 3:45 p.m.

Emilia Majewski, spokeswoman for the fire department, said the fire spread to another structure.

“It was just a house fire initially,” she said. “As they got there it seemed a lot bigger than what it was called in as.”

She added: “Right now they’re really trying to make sure it doesn’t go to other structures and especially the forest area.”

Some residents in the area reported hearing a loud boom and screams.

Wildland fire crews were on scene.

Majewski urged residents to stay clear of the area so firefighters could work safely.
