I appreciate Susan Atkinson’s commitment to transparency and member engagement. Those are goals I share.

After reading her letter (Herald, June 19), I reviewed LPEA’s posted board meeting agendas dating back to 2015. Throughout that time, the agenda consistently included “Member Comments and Concerns,” later shortened to simply “Member Comments.” I am not aware of a formal member question-and-answer period as part of the board’s regular monthly meetings.

I believe public comments are an essential part of cooperative governance. They give members the opportunity to raise concerns, ask questions and share perspectives before the board begins its deliberations. As board president, I summarize the themes and questions raised during public comment to ensure every member who speaks knows their perspective has been heard and considered.

When a question can be answered immediately, we often do. But many questions require research to ensure the answer is complete and accurate. In those cases, members are better served by a thoughtful response after the meeting.

The monthly board meeting is also just one of many opportunities for dialogue. LPEA hosts Coffee with Chris, Community PowerX events, town halls, the annual meeting and directors’ contact information is publicly available for members who wish to reach out directly.

I write as one elected director, not on behalf of the full board. Because LPEA Policy 126 assigns the board president responsibility for conducting public comment, I’d like to clarify the current practice.
