The arrogance is almost unbelievable. Mayor Yazzie’s comment relating to parking for the new city hall/police “campus” – “but just see what we come up with, or take the land from Buckley Park” – is monumentally shortsighted and just plain idiotic.
Buckley Park is to Durango what Central Park is to New York City. It is central to the heart of this town, hosting so many important cultural events and providing a calm, quiet, shaded space for our community. Yes, the city purchased it – but they did so to protect and preserve it. There should be no encroachment on this park by any developer, which includes the city of Durango. Once you go down this road, what’s next?
I trust the other council members will reject Yazzie’s untenable suggestion, because we really won’t understand what we’ve got until it’s gone.
