On May 9, I reported a dog locked in a hot car. I had to leave the scene but trusted that police would promptly respond. Thirty-eight minutes later, I received a call from the Durango Police Department saying they were on the scene – and the car was gone.
I told the officer that 38 minutes to respond to a dog locked in a hot car was unacceptable. He said two missing juveniles had slowed their response time. I asked why animal control hadn’t responded and was told they don’t work on weekends.
It’s bad enough when someone leaves a helpless dog in a hot car with no windows open. It’s worse that Durango lacks the resources to handle emergency situations on weekends. We should expect more from those who are supposed to protect and serve.
