A question came to mind when I saw the banner on the April 29 Durango Herald saying the printed issue would not be available because of problems with the printing press in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

What happened to Durango buying local? I guess that does not mean The Durango Herald, our “local” paper, is necessarily a buy-local thing. So buy local – unless the word Durango is one of the main words in the product you buy and it is made in another state.

Sadly, the people in this town cannot actually print our local news in our town.

But remember: Always buy local. Or at least something made within a couple hundred miles away in another state.

Why can’t our local news come from a local place?

Editor’s note: The Durango Herald has operated for more than 70 years and for decades printed the newspaper in its downtown Durango building, and then in Cortez. Like many newspapers across the country, sustaining local journalism has required operational changes as printing and distribution costs have risen. While we would welcome the ability to print in Durango again, the economics no longer support a local press operation. The Herald continues to employ local journalists, editors, photographers and staff members, and remains committed to locally produced news coverage for the community.
