Our democracy is threatened. Our social institutions and legal guardrails have been critically damaged. Our next governor must be equipped to address these challenges over the next eight years, long beyond Donald Trump’s presidency. Our national government is increasingly dysfunctional, and unfortunately, we have allowed too much power to be centralized in Washington and the presidency. It is time to look to the states – they can be 50 laboratories of democracy. State policy innovations and successes in participatory democracy can lead us to a better future and rebuild the United States of America.

When I ask who is best equipped to lead this critical effort in Colorado, I want Sen. Michael Bennet as our next governor. His experience in business, education, and state and national political leadership provides the expertise we need. His willingness to work across partisan divides and his connections locally, nationally and internationally will be critical for Colorado to thrive despite the mess our country is in.

In normal times, Phil Weiser could be a good governor, but these are not normal times. These times call for a governor who can do more than run the state, who can do more than sue Trump for two more years. These times call for Bennet to help us maintain our democracy.
