The so-called Pine Gulch Fire started in western Colorado on July 31 because of lightning and was announced as contained on Wednesday. The fire burned more than 217 square miles of remote land, KUSA-TV reported.
The fire surpassed the Hayman Fire in 2002 as the largest recorded in the state. The 2002 fire burned more than 215 square miles.
