The nationwide project is to count those on foot and bikes just like automobiles are counted.
The numbers help define those using the roads in Durango, and they are used to pursue grants and funding for transportation projects, said Amber Blake, director of Transportation and Sustainability for the city of Durango.
Volunteers such as Matt Klausmeier, who sat from 7 to 9 a.m. on Thursday at 15th Street and East Second Avenue, helped with the count.
“It’s important for me to support and inform this program as part of Durango’s culture and community,” said Klausmeier, who is bicycle commuter.
