I remember when newspapers were one of society’s dependable guides for the proper use of the English language. Well, here I go again, and this time it is personal.

The recent Travel Section article titled “Whiskey, Wool & Walking” (Jan. 22) was a delightful read about the charm of Scotland’s Speyside region and a couple of beloved Scottish products, namely single malt scotch and cashmere.

Unfortunately, the author spelled whiskey incorrectly. In Scotland the term for “water of life” is spelled e-less, as in whisky.

I absolve the Herald for this egregious error because this article was one picked up from The Associated Press. However, perhaps the Herald should have used (sic).

Here endeth the lesson …
