Fat tire enthusiasts who enjoy pushing through packed and unpacked deep powder will give their quads a workout Saturday during the Silverton Whiteout, a 10-hour fat bike race in Silverton. Riders will make their way through a 9.2-mile course through downtown Silverton and surrounding roads. The race will begin at 9 a.m. at Grand Imperial Hotel and is part of the town’s Snowscape Winter Festival. The day will start at 6 a.m. with a Pancake Breakfast at the Grand Imperial. Other events will include an art show, dance party, BB target shooting contest, snow golf and hockey tournaments, a 1920s-inspired limbo contest, keg obstacle course, cardboard box derby, a bonfire, candlelight ski procession and end with a fireworks show by the San Juan Fire & Rescue Authority at 7:30 p.m. Events will take place in various locations, including the Grand Imperial Hotel, Kendall Mountain Ski Area, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad depot, Pedal the Peaks and Avon Hotel. Kendall Mountain will be open for skiing from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 5 to 9 p.m.
