I am no exception. My experience has been different than every other students’. I have enjoyed my time at The Durango Herald and feel as though my time spent here has helped me in deciding my future career choice. However, this week seemed to be filled with exciting events, many of which affected me. I believe that if I were to have an occupation in a news department, I would have to learn how to guard myself from saddening topics to ensure my happiness.

This week has been filled with new experiences. I had the pleasure of shadowing a reporter, Mary Shinn, to Rogers Reservoir for an interview about a city water crisis. I learned about the process put into writing an article or creating a newspaper, and I discovered how a news company functions. Through the Herald, I have learned that journalists often receive their assignments the day before it’s due to be published, and I learned that often, deadlines come much faster than expected.

Currently, Mountain Middle School is working on a project regarding editorials. I have found that my internship with the Herald has broadened my knowledge about opinion articles, and my editorial improved because of it. The eighth-graders who participated are required to create a presentation about their internships. Because my school project and my internship are related, I will have much of my assignment already completed.

I asked several employees of the Herald questions about their job. In response to a question about what she has learned through her job, copy editor and page designer Katie Chicklinski-Cahill said, “Nothing is predictable. Things can change in a second.”

From what I have experienced in my week at the Herald, I can agree. I now have a deeper understanding of how quickly the world can change.
