QB Jones leaves Tennessee for Colorado Buffaloes

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Reserve quarterback Sheriron Jones has left Tennessee and will transfer to Colorado.

Tennessee athletic department spokesman Ryan Robinson confirmed Thursday that Jones intends to transfer. Jones redshirted for Tennessee during his lone season on campus, leaving him with four seasons of eligibility.

Jones, who is from Perris, California, was rated as a consensus four-star recruit when he signed with Tennessee in February. Jones is listed as 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, threw for over 2,000 yards his senior year at Rancho Verde High School in Moreno Valley, California.

Nationals announce big deal for a former Met

WASHINGTON – Second baseman Daniel Murphy’s three-year contract with the Washington Nationals will cost the team only $8 million in 2016.

The $37.5 million deal calls for a $12 million salary in 2017 and $17.5 million in 2018, including $5.5 million deferred without interest. Washington owes $2.5 million of the deferred money on Jan. 15, 2019, and the rest on Jan. 15, 2020.

The 30-year-old Murphy starred in October when he homered in a record six consecutive postseason games and was voted the MVP of the NL Championship Series.

School cancels season for team in investigation

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A Tennessee high school has canceled its basketball season after three players were charged with raping a teammate in an apparent hazing incident.

Hamilton County Schools Superintendent Rick Smith said Wednesday he was taking this “very unusual step” with Ooltewah High School so investigators can do their jobs without interference.

Gatlinburg police say three teens face aggravated rape and aggravated assault charges in connection with injuries to a teammate who underwent surgery after being assaulted while attending a basketball tournament.

2 World Cup races are canceled by warm weather

OBERHOFEN, Switzerland – The International Ski Federation canceled two World Cup races in Germany, forcing more changes in an increasingly warm winter.

FIS says “warm temperatures, lack of snow and unfavorable weather forecasts” caused it to cancel the women’s giant slalom and slalom races in Ofterschwang on Jan. 16-17.

FIS says it is looking for a replacement venue.

Races in Finland, Germany, Croatia and Austria have been canceled or switched this season in the men’s and women’s calendar.

Paraguay authorities raid CONMEBOL offices

ASUNCION, Paraguay – Paraguayan authorities raided the headquarters of the South American soccer confederation Thursday in connection to the sprawling FIFA probe being led by U.S. and Swiss prosecutors.

The U.S. Justice Department last year indicted several top soccer officials and businessmen in an alleged scheme that involved receiving bribes for broadcast rights to Copa America games.

Video replay trials under strong consideration

LONDON – Soccer’s rule-makers are discussing whether to approve trials of video replays to assist referees who find it harder to keep up with the faster, modern game.

The International Football Association Board was meeting on Thursday in London.
