This photograph shows part of the large crowd gathered at the Fort Lewis College picnic grounds along the La Plata River near Hesperus for “Senior Day” around 1933. Accompanying photos identify a number of the school’s teachers and administrators at the event. The exact date of the photo is uncertain, but based on the school’s transition to only offering college courses starting in 1933 and the automobile models, 1933 can be considered fairly accurate. In fall 1933, 90 students, 44 men and 46 women, were enrolled at the Hesperus campus. – Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org (Catalog Number: 01.11.9 from the La Plata County Historical Society Photo Collections)
