The Community Cares 5K has become a favorite – and effective – way for locals to help one of our own who is going through a rough time.

This year, the seventh outing of the event will be held Saturday to benefit Kristen Dugan and her family: husband, Jeremy, and their two sons, Tyler and Ryan, who are first- and third-graders at Park Elementary School.

Kristen Dugan has been fighting cancer since 2012, said Ken Flint, the race director.

It began with breast cancer, when she was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in-situ, which had spread to the lymph nodes. The treatment plan included a double mastectomy, eight rounds of chemotherapy and 25 radiation treatments.

In summer 2014, doctors discovered Dugan’s breast cancer had spread to her bones, including her hips, ribs, spine and neck. Starting in September that year, she began the commute to Phoenix for treatment, and the cancer seemed to go into remission. After a break from treatment, it returned, so she’s back in treatment.

“She is still fighting the fight with a positive attitude and a strong will to live,” Flint said.
