His tirades to The Durango Herald and on social media outlets show how much he no longer deserves to be sheriff. For him to engage people on a one-on-one basis and ultimately threaten them with a summons is outrageous. He has become complacent and careless. The Sheriff’s Office is a place of dignity, perseverance and professionalism.

I am a registered Republican, but I will vote for Sean Smith (Democrat) because I feel he is the best candidate for the job. He brings new ideas and leadership but, most importantly, professionalism. Duke Schirard has had an outstanding career in law enforcement; however, it’s time for him to step down.

And to the perpetrator who continues to knock down my Sean Smith for sheriff sign in my front lawn: If I catch you in the act, I’ll be calling your boss to arrest you for vandalism, trespassing, and destruction of personal property.
