Earlier in the day, the Padres sent right-hander James Shields and $29 million to the Chicago White Sox for two prospects, capping one of the more miserable weeks in team history. The deal came three days after Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler criticized the last-place team’s recent performances as being “embarrassing” and “pathetic,” and called out Shields for his poor start Tuesday at Seattle.

Andrew Cashner (3-5) snapped a personal three-game losing streak. He held Colorado to three runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings, struck out three and walked three.

Chad Bettis (4-5) allowed four runs and 10 hits in five innings, struck out three and walked one.
