It is important that we create fair congressional districts, not ones drawn by partisan politics.

However, I have deep concerns that the current redistricting proposal has been conducted by power brokers behind closed doors.

The recent concerns expressed by State Rep. Angela Williams, D-Denver, about the lack of involvement from minority members of our state should give Sen. Ellen Roberts, R-Durango, and the other members of the proposal group pause before moving forward.

I encourage Sen. Roberts to increase the public involvement in the process prior to submitting the ballot language.

It is important that the new redistricting board empower all members of our state, not just a select few.

If the proposal is to go forward without equal representation from members of our minority communities and without more public involvement in the process, then the voters of our great state should not support the current redistricting proposal.
