When I read Jim Cross’ opinion column, “Durango’s growing disrespect for seniors: From health care to dark chocolate,” (Herald, Jan. 9) I thought of an additional point worth writing about.

I do not need a Boy Scout to walk me across the street (yet), but I do need parents and students to be kind and courteous to the seniors, volunteers and staff trying to exit the Senior Center at dismissal time at Durango High School.

The Senior Center is located north of DHS, and exiting at dismissal time is complete chaos. The parent pickup area becomes bumper-to-bumper with no signage directing parents after they complete their pickup. This creates problems for those exiting from the north. Add to this the students exiting from the east parking area – mostly disregarding their stop sign and often blocking the Senior Center exit – and you have an extremely dangerous situation. There is a single exit for students, parents and seniors alike.

School district representatives have made attempts (some I have personally spoken with) to improve this situation, but the remedy lies with simple human kindness from behind the wheel. Take a moment to think of how you would like your mom or dad, your grandmother or grandfather, or even yourself to be treated in such a situation.

It is customary to “merge” in the lift line when skiing. Let’s practice the same courtesy at the Senior Center exit: simple human kindness and respect for each other.
