Bo Dean’s Towing and Repair uses two heavy tow trucks on Thursday to recover a truck that drove off U.S. Highway 550 at the Cascade Creek hairpin turn. The highway was closed until midafternoon during the recovery. The truck was transporting a fine brown powder called drilling mud in bags loaded on pallets. The crash covered the area with the material, and some make it into the creek. Colorado Parks and Wildlife aquatic biologist Jim White responded to the scene but did not immediately see any dead fish at the crash site or in pools further below the site. CPW water quality coordinators are looking into the toxicology of the substance. CPW will continue to follow up to determine impacts to aquatic life. (Jerry McBride/Durango Herald)
