Common Threads, a community art project consisting of steel panels with patterns and images symbolic of the region, has been installed at the Durango-La Plata County Airport. The panels are visible to drivers as they exit the loading and unloading area of the airport. Common Threads is a collaboration among hundreds of Durango-area residents and artists. It was completed in 2019, but the panels have sat in storage for years as the city of Durango considered where to install the sculptures. It had originally been planned for the median at the intersection of U.S. highways 550 and 160 just south of the DoubleTree Hotel in Durango, but cost issues and concerns about line of sight upended that plan.
