Professional mountain bike racers from Durango made their mark last weekend at the Whiskey Off-Road Endurance races in Prescott, Arizona. Two Durangoans placed among the top five in the 50-mile race, and several more were scattered throughout the final standings.

Todd Wells was the top local rider, finishing second in 2 hours, 58 minutes, 37 seconds, 2 seconds behind winner Christoph Sauser of Switzerland. Howard Grotts of Durango was fifth in 3:01:01.

Other local riders included Rotem Ishay, 12th; Benjamin Sonntag, 22nd; Sepp Kuss, 30th; Troy Wells, 32nd; Greg Lewis 49th; Ryan Standish, 53rd; Nick Gould, 58th; Levi Kurlander, 62nd; and Stephan Davoust, 65th.

Grotts also placed seventh in the Fat Tire Crit. Sonntag was 12th, Ishay 14th and Troy Wells 19th.

Shannon Gibson of Durango placed 27th in the Women’s Open Endurance race and 30th in the criterium.

In the men’s amateur fun ride, Ivan Sippy of Durango finished 28th out of 172 riders.

Seniors Outdoors announces events

Devo Bike Swap set for Saturday

The Durango Devo Bike Swap will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Chapman Pavilion.

All bike-related gear is welcome. Gear drop-off will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today. Pickup of unsold items will be from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday.

Twenty percent of the proceeds will benefit Devo, a cycling organization with programs for more than 300 kids, 40 coaches and 20 groups.
