Manitou Springs showed up Saturday and played hard, but the Mustangs never really appeared to get in the game.

The Bayfield Wolverines did, however, blowing the 16th-ranked 2A team aside in a 40-0 shutout in Wolverine Country Stadium.

Now the number-one ranked 2A team in the state is moving on to the 2A quarterfinals in Brush on Saturday, Nov. 14 against the Beetdiggers.

“Congratulations!” a hoarse Head Coach Gary Heide hollered at his boys after the game. “You seniors stuck with it!

Backed by a body of sophomores and juniors, and some running carries by freshman standout David Hawkins, the seniors did shine.

Quarterback Kelton McCoy ran in two touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes in, the first to Brody McGhehey just a few minutes into the game.

Zane Phelps ran in the second touchdown, then the score stayed stubbornly at 12-0 throughout the rest of the first half.

At halftime, the Bayfield Wolverettes, BHS cheerleaders and the Marching Wolverines performed. The band was coming off its third-place performance at state 1A band competition, while the dance and cheer squads are practicing for state competition Dec. 11-12 in Denver.

McGhehey ran in the third TD of the day, during the third quarter, then the BHS offense was off and running. McCoy ran in the first of his touchdowns, and it was 24-0 at the end of the third quarter. At the start of the fourth, McCoy threw another pass to Taed Heydinger, then Zane Phelps ran it in for a two-point conversion, and it was 32-0.

Then the seniors switched it up a bit as McCoy ran in a short distance for his second touchdown, then threw it to Heydinger after that for another two, to hit 40-0.

Wyatt Frier and Heydinger almost scored a few more touchdowns throughout the game.

For Manitou Springs, junior Davyn Adamscheck had an outstanding game, serving as the team’s lead rusher, kicker, and backup quarterback, while making several tackles.

Manitou never got close to Bayfield’s goal-line, however, and when the Mustangs had the ball, it usually was turned over fairly quickly to the Wolverines.

The defensive line of Noah Loutherback, Hunter Killough, Phelps, Cash Snooks, Cole Wood and Clyde Leonard made sure those turnovers happened fairly quickly and limited Manitou Springs to a handful of first downs for the entire game. Wood led the defense with nine tackles, followed by Jesse Westbrook with seven and one fumble recovery. Hawkins also had six tackles.

Phelps racked up 104 yards rushing.

Brush defeated Moffat County in Craig 49-27 on Saturday to move into the quarterfinals. The winner of the Bayfield-Brush game will move into state semi-finals on Nov. 21 to play either La Junta or Sterling.
