The Demons lost 49-28 at Montrose on Saturday after scoring just 18 points through three quarters.
“They were very patient and methodical,” DHS head coach Nancy Smith said of Montrose. “There were two very different styles of play.”
Emily McCue led DHS with 14 points, her fourth consecutive game in double figures, and Augusta Brockus had eight.
DHS (3-9, 1-3 Southwestern League) trailed 20-10 at halftime.
Both teams scored just five points in the first frame.
“Montrose really packed its defense inside the three-point line,” Smith said. “They hang back; they don’t come out and challenge a lot.”
Montrose (9-5, 4-0 SWL) won for the fourth consecutive game, while DHS dropped its third game in a row.
The Demons next will play against archrival Montezuma-Cortez at 6 p.m. Thursday in Cortez.
“The beautiful thing about basketball is that here’s always something to improve,” Smith said. “We’ll take a look at those areas we’re weakest in and build them up.”
