As I listened to the speeches and chants echoing down Main Avenue during the March 28 No Kings demonstration, I was struck by a slightly hollow feeling. Is this what resistance looks like?
I believe it is important for Durango to have opportunities to voice opposition to the rise of American fascism, and I do not want to diminish the unifying work of Indivisible Durango. Yet, as I made my way home, I did not feel energized. I felt demoralized and left wondering whether outrage had translated into outcomes.
I heard speeches about Gaza, moral appeals to direct action and “good news” stories about superintendents delivering diplomas to deported students. I did not hear clear direction toward concrete local action.
Why relegate the Deflock SW CO movement to a small side table and stumble over ourselves thanking the Durango Police Department for use of Main Avenue? Why not use Rep. Hurd’s re-endorsement by President Trump as a call to register voters en masse?
There is no one left to convince. What remains is to act.
