The dozen or so Civil War veterans in Animas City Cemetery with headstones old and new were remembered during the Memorial Day weekend.
All fought for the North.
The cemetery predates the founding of Durango with a first burial in 1877 and most recent in 1966, according to local historian Ruth Lambert. It is located on a bench above Florida Road and below North College Drive, and is on the City’s Registry of Historic Places.
