Chip Johnson, left, leads an atlatl practice at Buckley Park on Monday afternoon. Johnson, who teaches an Outdoor Leadership Class at Grace Preparatory Academy, instructs students on the art of an atlatl, a wooden device used to propel darts to a target. It is a prehistoric hunting tool; now, thousands of years later, it is more commonly used in sport. Durango has its own World Atlatl Association club that competes internationally. The club next meets on May 22.
