The Southern Ute Cultural Center and Musuem is hosting an art show and sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, and Saturday, Aug. 29.
Sculpture, leather and beading, cradle boards, flutes, moccasins, photography, and other handmade art will be for sale, along with artist demonstrations.
Rally hosting volunteer meeting Saturday
The Four Corners Motorcycle Rally will host a volunteer meeting at noon Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Sky Ute Fairgrounds across from the old elementary school building in Ignacio.
Anyone who donates four hours of volunteer time for the rally will earn a day pass. Eight hours of earns a weekend pass. Volunteers are needed in the beer tent, parking, and for a variety of other tasks.
Community potluck is Saturday
The monthly Pine River Shares community potluck is Saturday, Aug. 22, at Eagle Park in Bayfield. Anyone from the valley is welcome. Set-up starts at 4 p.m. Food serving starts at 5 p.m. with hamburgers, hotdogs and fixins’ provided. Please bring a salad, vegetable, or dessert to share and your own table service. Fresh local produce and non-perishable food items will be available for people to take. Helpers are always welcome for set-up and clean-up. For information call the Bayfield Family Center, 884-4747.

Faith Church giving away school supplies, clothes
Faith Community Church is hosting a “Back-to-School Giveaway” tonight to help families get ready for school.
Event organizer Nancy Leal says the goal is to give back to community.
“Our church members and others have donated clothes, school supplies, and backpacks for local kids,” Leal said, “and we want to make sure anyone that needs help this time of year can get it.”
The clothing giveaway is from 4 to 7 p.m. tonight.
There also are backpacks and school supplies for the first 50 families that come to the event. Free food also will be served.
Following the giveaway, the church will show the film “Wall-E” on an outdoor wall. Faith Community Church is located at 1400 Highway 172, about one mile south of Elmore’s Corner.

Alternative Horizons holding wine fest
Alternative Horizons will host its annual fundraiser, the Wine and Music Fest, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Smiley Building in the 1300 block of Third Avenue in Durango. This new location offers a shaded canopy. Wine, hors d’oeuvres, live jazz and a silent auction will be featured.
Tickets are $45 and can be purchased at the Wine Merchant and First National Bank of Durango’s main branch. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
All proceeds benefit Alternative Horizons, a local non-profit that provides comprehensive support and advocacy services to individuals and their children that are experiencing domestic violence in their lives. Town of Bayfield hosting street discussion
The Town of Bayfield will conduct two public presentations to provide citizens the opportunity to learn more about the town’s proposed street maintenance and preservation program and associated request for a sales tax increase.
Presentations will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, and Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Bayfield Town Hall. Light snacks will be provided. A copy of a presentation and informational brochure are also available on the front page of the town’s website at www.bayfieldgov.org.
Library offers Tech 102 class
The Pine River Library is offering “Technology 102,” the second part of an introductory technology class. This section of the class will allow students to explore current technology, providing tips on email, the internet, eCommerce, digital photos and safe computing. Participants did not have to attend the first part of this series.
“Technology 102” is taught by Jon Cordalis, a.k.a “The Computer Tutor.”
The three-hour course will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2. There is a $10 charge for the class, due at registration. Space is limited.

School board candidate petitions due Aug. 28
Three seats are open for both the Bayfield and Ignacio school boards, and petitions are due on Aug. 28.
Residents must live in their school district for 12 months in order to run for the board. Petitions are available from the district administration offices. Bayfield candidates must have 50 registered voters sign their petition, Ignacio candidates need 25.
