Music in the Mountains presents “A Bite of Jazz” dinner and concert series, featuring Better Knot, a neo-Celtic ensemble on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 E. Third Ave. in Durango. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. and the night begins with a baked potato dinner prepared by the High Notes. Beer and wine will be provided by The Wine Merchant. The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. Advance tickets at a discounted price are available through Friday, Jan. 29. Library starting science club for youth

Are you interested in helping to bring science into the lives of our community’s youth? Pine River Library’s Zap! Science Planning Club meets monthly to discuss the Zap! Science corner in the children’s section and science programming for all ages on no-school days.

The club’s first meeting of the year is today from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Adults, older teens and anyone interested in supporting and promoting science excitement are encouraged to join the club for these events. This meeting will be in the Imagination Room, and parents are welcome to bring children along to play while the club meets. At this event, organizers will select dates for upcoming meetings, select several month’s worth of corner themes, select the first Zap! No School Science Day event, present multiple volunteer opportunities, and more. For more information on “Zap! Celtic duo plays Feb. 5 at the Strater

The Durango Celtic Festival will present the duo Willson & McKee on Friday, Feb. 5, at the Strater Hotel Pullman Room (downstairs). They have been regular performers at the Celtic Festival in March. They will entertain with vocals accompanied on guitar, accordian, Celtic harp, Irish bouzouki, dulcimer, bodhan, and bagpipes.

The concert will start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. For information or tickets go to www.durangocelticfestival.com. The Celtic Festival itself is traditionally the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day.

Lions Club Foundation holding annual dinner

The Bayfield Lions Club Foundation will hold its sixth annual foundation dinner and auction at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 9 at the Lions Hall. The dinner will be prime rib and includes complimentary beer and wine. Tickets will be $25 per person.

The money raised will be used for the continued renovation of the hall which is available to the community for its use.

Auction prizes will be trips, dinners, art work and local crafts, plus much more.

Sheriff to address Cattlemen

Sheriff Sean Smith will be the guest speaker for the La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen’s Association at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25. The meeting will be held at the Extension Building at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Plans for association activities for 2016 will be finalized, including preparations for the annual banquet to be held on April 23 and the Chuck Wagon Cook-off on July 30.

Girls’ college scholarship available

The Dorothy Gore Scholarship sponsored by P.E.O. Chapter CS is available to any La Plata County graduating senior girl who has shown academic promise, leadership potential, serves her community and has at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average.  This $1,000 scholarship honors Dorothy Gore, a retired longtime Durango teacher.

All applicants to an academic college are considered, although priority is given to applicants to Cottey College, a four-year women’s college in Nevada, Missouri, owned by the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Information about Cottey is found online at www.cottey.edu.

Pine River Shares potluck offering first aid kits

Pine River Shares will holds its monthly community dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. tomorrow at Bayfield’s old middle schol gym. This will be an Italian-themed dinner. Feel free to bring side dishes or a dessert. Participants are also making first aid kits for the home or car. Bring a container of your choice and organizers will provide the first aid supplies.
