Beginning genealogy classes offered at Pine River Library

Pine River Public Library offers beginning genealogy classes from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20 and 27.

This series will be taught by professional genealogist Anna Hopkins-Arnold and will consist of two sessions that build upon each other. In the first session you’ll learn how to store and organize information about the people in your family tree. During the second class you’ll learn how to make and use a research plan and get an introduction to genealogy resources available at the Pine River Library, on the Internet, and in local archives. Bayfield Chamber meeting at BHS

The Bayfield Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual spring luncheon at noon Thursday, April 21 at Bayfield High School. Doc Roberts, owner of Skiboards.com, will speak on “Drive traffic to your business online.” The cost is $10 per person, with lunch provided by BHS catering students. IES holding Empty Bowls fundraiser

On Apri 21, Ignacio Elementary will host its third annual Empty Bowls fundraiser to help those in need of food. Students in third, fourth and fifth grades make custom clay bowls. The $10 purchase of a hand-made bowl comes with a ticket to the main event, a soup tasting and silent auction from 5 to 7 p.m. The purchase of four bowls and tickets is $35.

Tickets will also be available the night of the event, or you can pre-purchase tickets through Ignacio Elementary School. We are also looking for those interested in donating items for the silent auction or buying tickets for families in need.

Bayfield preschool enrollment is April 22

Bayfield Early Education Programs is taking applications for the 2016-2017 preschool year on Friday, April 22. Children must be at least three years old and potty trained to attend. Families may choose full or half day classroom attendance, an after school program, and a Friday enrichment class. The school is in session for nine months and follows the Bayfield School District calendar.

BEEP offers 20 Colorado Preschool Program slots for children who are educationally at risk.

Besides the CPP program, parents with moderate or low income may qualify for a sliding scale, apply for scholarships, bartering, or CCCAP help to pay tuition.

BEEP urges families to apply as soon as possible to get the schedule they want and need. Slots fill quickly.

Starlab coming to library on Monday

Take a trip to outer space at Pine River Library! The STARLAB, an inflatable portable planetarium will be set up in the library on Monday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bayfield K-12 schools won’t be in session this day, so stop on by any time! This free interstellar experience is open to all ages and abilities. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Ignacio Elementary School enrolling kindergartners

In April and May, Ignacio Elementary School will register incoming kindergarten students for the 2016-17 school year.

IES will host a school visit for Southern Ute Head Start preschool students at 10 a.m. April 20. All other kindergarten age students and their parents are welcome to attend at this time as well.

There will be placement testing from 8 a.m. to noon on May 23 and noon to 4 p.m. on May 24. Parents and guardians can come in any time to pick up a registration packet for the 2016-17 school year. A birth certificate and immunization record are required when enrolling a student.

Quilt guild to discuss charity quilts

La Plata Quilters Guild will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, at First United Methodist Church. Members Pat Akers and Beth Emrich will reprise last year’s visit as Lucy and Ethel and present a program titled “KISS: Keep It Super Simple” with handy hints on how to choose a pattern to make charity quilts. Guild members make and donate quilts to Gold Star Mothers, Hospice of Mercy and the VA Hospital in Albuquerque. Quilts are also sold to support Project Linus. Guests are always welcome.
