Learn to tie a Wooly Bugger at class

Have you always wanted to try your hand at tying your own flies?

Join local fly fishing guide Glenn Tinnin for a beginning fly-tying class at Pine River Library from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 14. Participants will learn to tie a Wooly Bugger and a San Juan Worm in this two-hour class.

Tickets on sale for 13th annual Cook-off

Tickets are now available for the 13th annual La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen’s Chuck Wagon Cook-off.

The cook-off, with eight wagons competing, will be held on July 30 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Tickets are available at Basin Co-op in Durango. For more information, call Barbara at 247-2816.

Learn about home canning at library

Wendy Rice from the La Plata County Extension office will present “Canning Basics for Safe Preserving” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, at the Pine River Library.

Rice will explain the “how and why” of preserving food at home with a focus on canning safety, types of equipment and proper canning methods. Whether you’re a canning beginner or just in need of a refresher, this course will provide you with confidence to “put up” this summer’s bounty.

Library to offer class on backing up data

Ignacio Community Library will offer “Backing Up Your Data” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 12.

Anyone who has ever lost a digital photo, music mp3 or important document after thinking it was safely saved to your computer can learn how to back up data and never lose a file again.

Society to discuss crime investigation

The San Juan Basin Archeological Society will meet on Thursday, July 14, with a presentation about the investigation of alleged archeological crimes from 2004-2006. It’s free and open to the public.

The program starts at 6 p.m. with a reception in the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Lyceum. Speakers will be Paul Berkowitz, retired criminal investigator for the National Park Service, and Billy Malone, who was investigated for alleged crimes while he ran the Hubbell Trading Post on the Navajo Reservation. He was eventually cleared by Berkowitz, and all the goods taken from him by the Park Service were returned.

Bayfield Chamber to meet at Hideaway

The Bayfield Chamber of Commerce will meet next week at the Hideaway Grill at 18044 County Road 501 in Vallecito.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. with a social half-hour; an informal meeting will begin at 6 p.m. All are welcome.

Walk and talk about books on July 15

In celebration of the Summer Reading Program fitness theme, the Pine River Library is organizing a “Rambling Readers” walk from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 15, at Saul’s Creek.

Participants have the choice of meeting at the gate of Saul’s Creek east of Bayfield at 9:30 or meeting at the library at 9:15 to carpool to the location. Join us for an hour of walking and talking about your favorite books.

Turtle Lake teaching permaculture class

Volunteers from Turtle Lake Refuge will teach a wild plant permaculture course from July 22 to July 31 in Durango.

Wild Plant Permaculture is a 10-day certification course with hands-on instruction focusing on an integration of wild edible and medicinal plants and sustainable living practices. The course is taught by a team of experienced teachers and local permaculture activists.

Healthy Communities to celebrate birthday

The Celebrating Healthy Communities Coalition will hold its 24th birthday party from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, at Eagle Park in Bayfield. All are welcome.

Book club meeting at Ignacio library

The Daytime Book Club at Ignacio Community Library will meet to discuss Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 21.

The novel explores what it means to be black in the U.S. and tells the story of a young Nigerian couple, one of whom leaves for England, the other for America.
