WASHINGTON – The Secret Service says a man has been arrested after he climbed over a fence at the White House.
Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary says the man climbed over the fence around 4 p.m. Sunday and was immediately arrested. The White House briefly went into lockdown after the incident, which is standard procedure.
The Secret Service did not immediately release the identity of the man, and Leary said charges were pending.
Sen. Schumer seeks WTC security review
NEW YORK – Sen. Charles Schumer stood by the World Trade Center Sunday, demanding federal officials review security after daredevils twice sneaked to the top of the site’s signature, 104-story skyscraper.
His request comes after a teenager was charged with climbing to the top of the 1,776-foot spire of 1 World Trade Center, three skydiving enthusiasts turned themselves in to face charges in a September jump off the building and a newspaper published a photo of a guard apparently sleeping on the job.
“What is going on here?” Schumer asked.
The New York Democrat wants the Department of Homeland Security to monitor the performance and training of trade center security guards in addition to testing surveillance equipment and checking the perimeter for possible illegal entry points.
Earthquake shakes Yellowstone park
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. – The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-4.8 earthquake that shook northern Yellowstone National Park is the strongest there since 1980.
But the Sunday quake was still considered relatively light, and its location didn’t raise concerns about the park’s supervolcano, which experts say has the potential to erupt with a force about 2,000 times the size of Mount St. Helens and would have worldwide effects.
The University of Utah Seismograph Stations says the earthquake occurred at 6:34 a.m. about 4 miles north-northeast of the Norris Geyser Basin. It was felt in the Montana border towns of West Yellowstone and Gardiner.
There were no immediate reports of damage. The park has few visitors and staff this time of year.
Yellowstone sees frequent earthquakes. Since Thursday, there have been at least 25 recorded.
