Kendall Lloyd has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army after successfully completing the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program and graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University.
The new officer will be branched to a specific corps in the Army to serve on active duty or in the Army National Guard or Army Reserve. The lieutenant will attend an officer basic course relating to a particular military occupational specialty/job. Afterward, the officer will complete advanced training by attending basic officer leadership courses for career progression purposes.
The ROTC curriculum prepares students with the tools, training and experiences to help cadets succeed as effective leaders in any competitive environment.
Lloyd is a 2010 graduate of Durango High School.
Danielle Garcia graduates boot camp
Danielle Garcia was accepted and graduated from The Coast Guard Boot Camp, Cape May, New Jersey, on May 1 after eight weeks of training.
Garcia graduated with 60 percent of her original class. She is a lifelong resident of Durango and graduated from Durango High School in 2008. Garcia graduated from the University of Arizona in 2013 with a degree in plant sciences. She is now assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Healy, USCGC Healy (WAGB-20), which is based out of Seattle.
The Coast Guard Healy is a polar ice breaker and among the largest in the Coast Guard fleet. The Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB-20) is United States’ newest and most technologically advanced ice breaker. Healy is designed to conduct a wide range of research activities, providing more than 4,200 square feet of scientific laboratory space, numerous electronic sensor systems, oceanographic winches and accommodations for up to 50 scientists. Healy is designed to break 4½ feet of ice continuously at three knots and can operate in temperatures as low as -50 degrees F.
Garcia’s ultimate ambition is to train as a marine science technician with the Coast Guard. She is the daughter of Skip and Terri Garcia of Durango, and the granddaughter of Francis and Claudine Garcia of Durango and Jerome and Katherine Gamba of Glenwood Springs.
