Major streets in Farmington’s prime business district were shut down Tuesday morning when police responded to a report of a man who threatened to harm himself, according to city police.

The Farmington Police Department announced at 8:08 a.m. on its Facebook page that a 38-year-old man called dispatchers and threatened to “harm himself.”

Law enforcement officers closed an area surrounding Civitan Park from 30th Street to 20th Street north to south and from Butler Avenue to Dustin Avenue east to west.

After a crisis negotiator spoke with the man, he reportedly died from a self-inflicted wound. The man’s name was not released.

The city of Farmington typically releases limited information on such “very sensitive topics,” said Public Affairs Administrator Georgette Allen, but it announced the incident because it occurred in “a very public location, and it caused a shutdown of the streets.”

Affected streets reopened by 8:55 a.m., although Civitan Park remained closed until 10:45 a.m.

The Durango Herald will provide further details as they become available.
