LEAP is designed to help low-income households pay their winter home heating costs. To qualify, applicants must be responsible for paying heating costs directly to an energy provider, fuel dealer, or as part of rent. Eligibility and benefits are determined by factors such as household income, type of dwelling, family size and fuel type. The program is not intended to pay the entire cost of home heating or utility usage.
Applications are available at the La Plata County Department of Human Services at 10 Burnett Court in the Durango Tech Center, at most fuel vendors, La Plata Electric Association, local libraries, at many community agencies and at www.colorado.gov/cdhs/LEAP.
LEAP-eligible households may also qualify for the Crisis Intervention Program, which provides assistance with repair or replacement of a home’s primary heating source such as a furnace or wood-burning stove.
