Tassel-eared squirrels to be discussed
The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “Tassel-Eared Squirrels and Ponderosa Pines – A Relationship of Necessity” by Sylvester Allred at 7 p.m. Thursday in Noble Hall, Room 130.
Tassel-eared Squirrels live only in the ponderosa pine forests of the southwestern United States. These squirrels are unique among the tree squirrels in North America and are critical to the health of these forests.
Their nesting and feeding behaviors create a symbiotic relationship with the ponderosa pines in their environment, leading the U.S. Forest Service to designate them as a management indicator species related to assessing the overall health of the forests in which they reside.
