The Mount Allison Go-Getters 4-H Club is serving a Thanksgiving Dinner for senior citizens from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Allison Grange in Allison.

Quilters guild to meet today

The La Plata Quilters Guild will meet at 5:30 p.m. today at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road.

Cards for troops available at Rite Aid

Rite Aid, 28 Town Plaza, will host holiday greeting cards to be signed and sent to troops overseas.

The public can sign cards provided by Rite Aid and thank those who serve the country.

Cards will be in the lobby until the day after Thanksgiving.

Karen Skelly Photography is offering gift certificates for the holidays, and the Women’s Resource Center will receive 20 percent of the entire purchase.

The gift certificates can be for any amount and used at any time. The certificates can be used for weddings, family portraits, high school senior portraits or any other event.

County to launch social media offerings

The county has launched social-media offerings designed to keep citizens informed of the business of county government as well as emergency events.

The county will use the La Plata County Government Facebook page, as well as the La Plata County Office of Emergency Management Twitter account and blog. The Facebook page will offer updates on the commissioner’s schedules and meetings, special meetings and events, election information, calendars and more.

The site also will be used for emergency notices, evacuations, closures and announcements.

La Plata County has three Facebook pages: www.facebook.com/LaPlataCounty and specific Facebook pages for La Plata County Government Clerk and Recorder and La Plata County Fairgrounds

For preparedness tips and early information and updates on emergencies in progress, residents can follow the county’s Office of Emergency Management on BlogSpot or Twitter. The Twitter account can be found at LPC_OEM. To follow updates by text message text “FOLLOW LPC_OEM” to 40404 on a cellphone.

Slash piles to be burned near Electra

San Juan National Forest fire crews will resume burning slash piles on National Forest lands southeast of Electra Lake.

Several hundred slash piles will be burned today and Friday. Pile burning will take place in the middle of the day to allow for smoke dispersal before nightfall. No closures are expected.

Durango Bird Club to meet Friday

The Durango Bird Club will meet at 7 p.m. Friday at the Department of Wildlife Museum at the Durango Fish Hatchery, 151 E. 15th St.

This meeting will focus on planning the Christmas bird count – determining a date and coordinating birders with a route of their choice. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend.

Time permitting, Riley and Heather Morris will give a presentation on birds they saw in England last spring.
