The public is invited to a Solarize La Plata open house from noon to 2 p.m. today at 333 E. 29th St. to view an operating solar-voltaic system and to learn how to participate in Solarize La Plata.

This resident-driven program is a limited-time offer to install residential solar systems with energy education, financing packages and professional help through the entire process.

Bird walk to be held in Durango this week

A bird walk will be hosted by the Durango Bird Club at 9 a.m. Wednesday at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave.

The walks last about one hour and 15 minutes. Bring binoculars. It’s free, but donations to the hosting group are welcome.

Road Runner Transit will not run Thursday and Friday during Thanksgiving.

Pet photos with Santa to be taken Nov. 30

Creature Comforts and the La Plata County Humane Society will host Pet Photos with Santa from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 30.

All proceeds will benefit the humane society. All participants will receive a goodie bag compliments of Creature Comforts. Photos will be taken in Creature Comforts, 305 South Camino del Rio in the Centennial Center.

Durango Public Library to hold birthday drawing

The Durango Public Library building opened Dec. 1, 2008, and people are invited to drop off a birthday card, sharing why the library is important to them.

Participants will be entered in a drawing for a gift basket full of local items. Cards may be dropped off at the library, 1900 East Third Ave., from Dec. 2 to 5. The drawing will be held Dec. 6. Participants should include their name, phone number and email on the card.

Bayfield library to host Microsoft Excel class

Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield, will offer a free, beginning Microsoft Excel class from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 2 and 3.

This free class is for computer users with basic keyboarding skills. Microsoft Word skills are helpful, but not required. Participants must sign up for the classes in order to guarantee a spot.

Thanksgiving dinner set for fairgrounds

The 27th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

The tables will be decorated, the band will play, and turkey with all the trimmings will be served by volunteers.

There is no charge for this dinner, but monetary donations are appreciated.
