The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education is accepting applications from people living in Director District A and District D who are interested in serving on the Board of Education from the date of appointment until the regular biennial school election in November 2015.
A candidate must have been a resident of the school district for the last 12 months, be a registered voter of the school district, and a current resident of Director District A or D. Boundary maps are available at http://durangoschools.org or from the 9-R Superintendent’s Office in the Central Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St. Any person who wants to be considered for the appointment must file a letter of interest with the board clerk by 10 a.m. Dec. 3. Class is available for homebuyers
The Regional Housing Alliance of La Plata County offers a free monthly Homebuyer Education Class.
The class is an eight-hour program designed to help participants purchase and own a home. Topics will include: buyer readiness, budget/financial management, credit reports and scoring, mortgage lending, working with a real estate agent, homeowners insurance, home inspections, the closing process, home maintenance and foreclosure prevention. The class is facilitated by the alliance with contributions from local professionals such as loan officers, realtors and insurance agents who teach participants about their specific field.
The December class will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 4. and from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 7. Registration is required.

Land Use, Development Code to be discussed
The city of Durango will host a public meeting about the draft Land Use and Development Code from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing about the code at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 5 in council chambers of Durango City Hall, 949 East Second Ave. The code sets out the rules for the use and development of land within city limits and is in the process of being updated. The public meeting Dec. 4 will offer community members an opportunity to learn about and provide feedback on the new code. The code is available at www.durangocodeupdate.com. Thanksgiving service to be held Thursday
The annual Thanksgiving service will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Christian Science Church, 1166 East Third Ave.
The service includes praise organ music before and after the service, three hymns, reading of the Thanksgiving Proclamation of the President of the United States, readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, a vocal solo and expressions of gratitude for blessings by students of Christian Science.

Thanksgiving dinner seeks pie donations
The Community Thanksgiving Dinner needs of pies to serve at the dinner.
People who are able to donate a pie, can drop it off at 7 a.m. Thursday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave. The dinner will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the fairgrounds.
Volunteers sought to help with tax returns
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, a free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service, is seeking volunteers to help Colorado taxpayers who are seeking assistance preparing and filing their 2013 tax returns.
Volunteers do not need to be an AARP member or retiree to participate. Tax-Aide is particularly in need of volunteers who are bilingual in English/Spanish to support the increasing number of Spanish-speaking taxpayers seeking assistance. Volunteers receive free tax training and are reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program-related expenses.

Bayfield to host Christmas celebration
Bayfield’s Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Pine River Senior Center, 111 E. South St., in Bayfield.
Activities will include: Santa and Mrs. Claus; youth and adult door prizes; free food; kids’ activities and crafts; holiday movies and music; carriage rides; kiddie train rides; and the Adopt-A-Tree contest.
