Katherine Burgess will give a presentation, “Why We Travel: Tourism through the Ages” at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Animas Museum.
Her talk will draw on the history of travel and tourism and discuss the many motivations that have caused human beings to venture far from home and then return.
Using her experience in the travel industry, her professional teaching background and her experiences abroad as a Foreign Service spouse, Burgess will briefly describe past and current trends in tourism.
The museum and the Smithsonian traveling exhibit will be open for touring as well. There is no charge. The museum is at 3065 West Second Ave.

Sunshine Gardens to offer free lectures
“Night to a Better Life” will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Sunshine Gardens, 25 Sunshine Court, Durango.
The free event will feature “Solutions to Stress” with Dr. Trapper Niccum and “Juice Talk” with Durango Juice Bar. Refreshments will be provided by Durango Juice Bar.

Buddhist study group to meet Thursday
A Buddhist study group will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Rocky Mountain Retreat, 848 East Third Ave. The topic of the evening’s reflection and discussion will be the Feb. 13 visit of Khenpo Lobzang, who presented a teaching on the Four Dharmas of Gampopa. This teaching is a concise summation of the Buddhist spiritual path. All are welcome whether you attended or were unable to attend the teaching with Khenpo.

Climate discussion to be held Sunday
Environmental global catastrophic risks will be discussed at noon Sunday at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango, 419 San Juan Drive, Bowman Hall.
Climate change could constitute a global catastrophic risk if it is abrupt. Topics will include: whether running out of resources could destroy civilization, whether species loss could cause a chain reaction and significantly harm humans and what we can do about these risks.
Bring a sack lunch. The discussion is free and open to the public.

Kiwanis Club to meet Thursday
The Kiwanis Club of Durango will meet at noon Thursday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave. Frank Fristensky, of Enviroamerica Travel, will discuss traveling in Central Europe. Visitors are welcome.
