A free class titled: “Soils and Soil Amendments” will be held at noon Saturday at Native Roots Garden Center, 26266 U.S. Highway 160.
Participants will learn about local soils and how to amend their garden soils to maximize plant growth and production.

Work happiness to be discussed on May 16
Real happiness at work will be the topic of a talk given by The New York Times best-selling author and noted meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg on May 16 in the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.
Tickets will go on sale Monday. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for a silent auction and book sales with Salzberg’s talk at 7 p.m., followed by a book signing. Salzberg’s most recent book – Real Happiness at Work: Meditations for Accomplishment, Achievement, and Peace – will be the focus of her talk. She will offer pragmatic tools for becoming more productive, satisfied and peaceful at work.
As a student of meditation since 1971, Salzberg provides guidelines for cultivating mindfulness, compassion and awareness in one’s professional life.

The evening with Salzberg is presented by the Durango Dharma Center. Proceeds from the event will enable the center to maintain its current operations at 208 East Animas Road (County Road 250).
Rotary Club of Durango to meet Tuesday
Nicole Mosher, executive director of Companeros, will present to the Rotary Club of Durango at its meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.
Companeros: Four Corners Immigrant Resource Center is a nonprofit organization that aims to protect and expand Latino and immigrant rights and dignity in Southwest Colorado. Mosher will provide updates on new developments at the center. Visitors are welcome.

‘Preposterous’ lecture to be held Wednesday
Nate Klema, Matthew Klema, Ben Luck and Matt Wilson will present a “Preposterous Whitewater Formal,” an account of their adventures and misadventures on some of the world’s most remote and challenging rivers through pictures and stories Wednesday at the Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio.
The doors will open at 6 p.m. In August 2013, the group embarked on a four-month journey that took them from the Altai Mountains of Russia, through Kyrgyzstan’s Tian Shan range, to the Pamir plateau of Tajikistan, and along the Himalayan rivers of Nepal. Their trip gained national attention in October 2013, when the group went missing for three days after triggering their emergency signal beacon.
Their hour-long presentation will include a short question-and-answer session with an after party. Formal attire is requested.
La Plata Quilters Guild to meet today at church
The La Plata Quilters Guild will meet at 5:30 p.m. today at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road.
The program will be on taking care of sewing machines by Mike Roussin. Anyone who is interested in quilting is invited to visit or become a member.
