The Regional Housing Alliance of La Plata County offers a free monthly Homebuyer Education Class.

The class is an eight-hour program designed to help participants purchase and own a home. Topics include: buyer readiness, budget/financial management, credit reports and scoring, mortgage lending, working with a Realtor, homeowners insurance, home inspections, the closing process, home maintenance and foreclosure prevention.

The class is facilitated by the RHA with contributions from local professionals, such as loan officers, Realtors and insurance agents who teach participants about their specific field of expertise.

The March classes will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 6, 13 and 20. Registration is required.

Civic education series continues at library

The Durango Public Library continues its civic education series titled “What Do We Do?” with presentations by two city of Durango departments.

The Finance Department will speak about “Sales Tax and Collection” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 10. The city manager’s office will present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 24. “What Do We Do?” is a series of presentations by various city of Durango departments where personnel from the city will explain their roles and the services their department provides for the community.

Embracing Diversity Initiative to meet

The Embracing Diversity Initiative will offer its annual Diversity Dialogue from 8:45 a.m. to noon March 15 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

All ages, middle school and older are welcome to this free, annual Diversity Dialogue sponsored by San Juan Basin Health Department’s Celebrating Healthy Communities Coalition, Durango High School’s PEAT youth group and Fort Lewis College’s El Centro and Common Ground student groups. The city of Durango’s Community Relations Commission will be present to hear about community members’ experiences and perspectives. Light refreshments will be served.

Citizenship classes to be offered

The Durango Education Center, 701 Camino del Rio, Suite 301, announces the start of citizenship classes to help community members prepare for the Citizenship Test to become United States citizens.

The classes will provide the opportunity to learn about United States government, history and how to improve English pronunciation and speaking skills. This program will run from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from March 10 to May 22.

The cost for the 10-week program is $50. Preregistration is required.

Ignacio library to host family literacy night

The Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave., will host Family Literacy Night at 5 p.m. Thursday.
