Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County and the Universal Unitarian Fellowship will host students from Western Kentucky University through May 24.
The students are donating their time and money to help with construction of the 39th home built by Habitat. Locals also are encouraged to volunteer, as the foundation is being built with insulated blocks, and many hands will help to complete this phase. The address is 620 Fox Farm Circle in Bayfield.

AARP to meet Tuesday at senior center
The Durango AARP Chapter No. 1243 will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Durango/La Plata Senior Center, 2424 Main Ave.
Dave Smiley, certified financial planner professional and retired income certified professional of Oxford Asset Management, will be the speaker with his presentation “So You Want to Retire? Practical Considerations for Your Success” at 11 a.m. Seniors in the community are invited.

DHS Class of 1964 to host reunion
The Durango High School Class of 1964 will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday at the home of Mary Morrissey Thompson to work on the 50th reunion plans.

Native Plant Society to host field trip
San Juan Four Corners Native Plant Society will host a field trip to Sand Canyon Trail, located in the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, on Thursday.
The trip is slow-paced. Depending on the group, participants will walk a mile or two of the Sand Canyon Trail, or they will walk the Sand Canyon/East Rock Canyon 4½ mile loop.

Iron Horse announces some road closures
The 43rd annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic will begin Saturday.
U.S. Highway 550 from the Hampton Inn to County Road 203 in Hermosa will be limited to northbound vehicular traffic traveling in the southbound shoulder while Iron Horse participants will travel in the northbound lane. Southbound traffic will be detoured onto County Road 203 at the railroad tracks in Hermosa and come out onto the highway at Mountain Mania. This detour will be in effect from 7:15 to 9 a.m. Saturday.
U.S. Highway 550 will be closed between Durango Mountain Resort and Silverton from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Drivers should plan on 60 minute travel time from Durango to Durango Mountain Resort.
On May 25, access to all of the churches on Third Avenue will remain open. Main Avenue and East Second Avenue will be closed from 10th Street to Eighth Street.
There will be a time trial race on East Animas Road (County Road 250) from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 26. The East Animas Road (County Road 250) northbound lane of traffic will be closed. All vehicles will have to use the southbound lane and go south.

Trails 2000 to host Join & Renew Party
Trails 2000 will host its annual Join & Renew Party from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave.
The event will feature music, beer and light food. Carver’ Brewing Co. will provide a free beer to attendees who join or renew, as well as veggie chili, salad and snacks. Trails 2000 will give away swag and the chance to own a Trek District 56cm Commuter Bike.

Registration to take place for kindergartners
Bayfield Primary School, 658 S. East St. in Bayfield, will host indergarten registration or the 2014/15 school year Monday and Tuesday.
A child must be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 15 to qualify for entrance into kindergarten for the upcoming school year. Parents should bring their child’s birth certificate, immunization records and their child.
Parents will learn about the schedule and program and have a chance to ask questions. Registration can take from one to one and half hours.
