Durango Post 4031 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold its annual Buddy Poppy Days at these locations:
Thursday to Saturday at Walmart, 1155 S. Camino del Rio.
Friday and Saturday at North and South City Markets, 3130 Main Ave. and 6 Town Plaza.
Saturday at Albertons, 311 W. College Drive.
VFW members will distribute poppies and accept donations. The donations benefit disabled and needy veterans and their families and community children’s programs.
Hickenlooper to visit Durango
Sal Pace and Governor John Hickenlooper will visit Durango from 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 30 at Ska Brewing Company, 225 Girard St.
Suggested contribution levels for the event are Host at $1,100, Co-Host at $550 and Friend at $250. The minimum suggested amount is $100.

Colorado Futures Center study discussed
The Colorado Futures Center at Colorado State University will present study findings of the long-term challenges the state will face in paying for state government services that go into preserving Colorado’s quality of life, including kindergarten-12 education, health care, corrections, courts, higher education and more from 10 to 11:30 a.m. today at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Office, 2500 Main Ave.
The Colorado Futures Center released a video providing a summary of the sustainability study, which analyzes the long-term fiscal health of Colorado government’s main checking account for the decades ahead and builds on the study first completed in 2011. Durango announces holiday schedule
The following is the city of Durango’s schedule for the Memorial Day holiday Monday:
City administrative offices will be closed, including Durango City Hall, River City Hall, Durango Police Station and Substation, Durango Transit Center, Durango-La Plata County Airport, Greenmount Cemetery and the Parks & Recreation administrative offices.
The Durango Community Recreation Center will be open from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The aquatics area will close at 1:30 p.m. The Mason Center and Chapman Hill will be closed.
Durango Public Library and all branches will be closed.
Commercial trash and recycling pickup will occur as scheduled with all drop-off locations open. The Durango Recycling Center will be closed.
The transit and trolley will run regular schedules on all routes. There will be no transit service to Mercy Regional Medical Center, and Route 6 will run from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The parking window in the transit center will be closed.
Parking meters will be free in downtown.
Durango Derailers fundraiser to be held
Season’s Rotisserie and Grill, 764 Main Ave., will host a fundraising dinner May 28 to support the cycling team Durango Derailers and Children’s Hospital Colorado.
Proceeds will go to the Durango Derailers Fund, a family assistance fund that helps patients and their families with gasoline, lodging and food expenses when they need to travel from Southwest Colorado to Children’s Hospital Colorado. Bank of Colorado and Mountain Bike Specialists also will have a bike giveaway.
The team will ride in the 25th annual Courage Classic road-bike tour July 19 to 21 at Copper Mountain.

Free gardening class available
A free gardening class on “Landscape Irrigation Basics” will be taught at noon Saturday at Native Roots Garden Center, 26266 U.S. Highway 160.
Participants will learn how to design and install drip and sprinkler irrigation.
