The summer reading program “Fizz, Boom, Read!” will start at 10 a.m. June 2 for children from newborns to 18-year-olds at Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, Bayfield.
The first 200 kids to register will receive a packet of ladybugs. The program will offer other prizes for kids who are able to complete the program. The final grand prize drawing will be held July 25. Children can register for the program from June 2 to July 24.
The “Spark a Reaction” reading program is available for teens and adults. Teens also can start signing up at 10 a.m. June 2 for a chance to win prizes. Teen programs will be held at 11 a.m. Thursdays from June to July. The grand prize drawing for teens will be July 24. The teen program is open to youth in grades 6-12.
For adults, the summer reading program is similar to the teen program. Adults earn entries into a grand prize drawing by reading books or attending programs. This year prizes are gift cards to Amazon, a gas card, and smaller prizes. The grand prize drawing for adults will be July 26.

Bayfield library to host movie series
Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield, will offer the “Science Cinema” movie series which will feature nine classic films with a scientific theme.
The series will run at 7 p.m. Mondays from June 2 through July. The films will include: “The Nutty Professor,” June 2; “The Thing from Another World,” June 9; “Edison, the Man,” June 16; “The Time Machine,” June 23; “Destination Moon,” June 30; “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” July 7; “Frankenstein,” July 14; “The Absent Minded Professor,” July 21; and “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” July 28. Popcorn and snacks will be provided.

Archaeology society to meet June 3 in Cortez
As part of the Four Corners Lecture Series, the Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society will present Randall H. McGuire at 7 p.m. June 3 at the Methodist Church, 515 Park St., Cortez.
McGuire will discuss Cerros de Trincheras and War in the Formative Period Trincheras Tradition. McGuire’s presentation will address research on cerros de trincheras, terraces constructed by prehistoric people in Sonora, Mexico and the results of the Cerros de Trincheras and Defense Project.

Flag retirement ceremony to be held
Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, in Bayfield, will host a free “Flag Retirement Ceremony” with the help from the local American Legion office at 8 p.m. June 14.
Anyone who has a flag that is ready for retirement can be a part of this event. Typical flag retirement ceremonies include properly burning the flag. Community members also are invited to roast marshmallows and hot dogs in the library’s outdoor fire pit, starting at 7 p.m. The event also will feature a flag-raising ceremony.
