Southwest Studies lecture series continues
The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will continue its summer lecture series with visiting professor of art Barbara Klema’s presentation “How a Broken Wagon Wheel Led to the Foundation of the Taos Society of Artists in 1915” at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
A collaborative effort between the center and local art critic and author Judith Reynolds, the lecture topics were designed to be wide ranging. The lectures will be offered roughly every other week at 1:30 p.m Wednesdays in the Center of Southwest Studies Lyceum Room.
The story of the formation of the Taos Society of Artists is filled with dramatic images documenting the history of the Taos area in the early 20th century. Klema is a water-media artist and educator. She works as an adjunct in the art department at FLC and teaches classes through the Durango Botanical Society, the Durango Arts Center and privately.

5K run, 1K walk to be held in Bayfield
Skills for Living and Learning will host the 5K run and 1K family walk Friday at Joe Stephenson Park in Bayfield.
The race will start at 8 a.m. and the walk will start at 8:15 a.m. Registration forms are located in Bayfield Town Hall, Your Running Store and Gardenswarts and Facebook.
Construction update on U.S. 550/160
Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor Concrete Works of Colorado are planning to open the continuous flow left-turn lane – from northbound U.S. Highway 550 onto westbound U.S. Highway 160 – from 8 to 9 p.m. Monday.
If all goes as scheduled, northbound motorists on Monday night can begin using the new turn lane, crossing over at the new signal, which is about 500 feet south of the U.S. 550/160 intersection signal.
These travel impacts can be expected for the upcoming week:
A full northbound closure from 8 to 9 p.m. Monday is expected on U.S. 550/Camino del Rio. Crews will move barrier and switch the new signal for the northbound U.S. 550 to westbound U.S. 160 Continuous Flow left-turn lane, northbound travelers are advised to use an alternate route.
Single-lane closures and lane shifts for through lanes in both directions west of the U.S. 550/160 intersection will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
Single-lane closures and lane shifts south of College Drive will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
